Background of the Study

Waste management is a critical component of sustainable urban development, particularly in the real estate sector, where large-scale construction and operations generate significant amounts of waste. Effective waste management practices contribute to environmental protection, resource conservation, and improved living conditions. However, in many developing regions, including Sokoto State, waste management in real estate developments is often suboptimal due to inadequate infrastructure, poor regulatory enforcement, and limited public awareness.

Real estate developments in Sokoto State, including residential, commercial, and mixed-use properties, are increasing to meet the demands of urbanization. However, the growth of this sector has led to environmental concerns, particularly regarding construction waste, improper disposal practices, and limited recycling efforts. This study investigates current waste management practices in Sokoto State's real estate developments, identifying challenges and opportunities for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

The lack of effective waste management practices in real estate developments in Sokoto State has led to environmental degradation, health risks, and reduced property values. Despite regulations mandating proper waste disposal and management, many real estate projects fail to implement sustainable practices. This gap highlights the need for a comprehensive assessment of waste management practices in the sector to develop practical solutions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze current waste management practices in real estate developments in Sokoto State.

  2. To identify the challenges associated with implementing sustainable waste management practices.

  3. To propose strategies for improving waste management in real estate developments.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current waste management practices in real estate developments in Sokoto State?

  2. What challenges hinder the adoption of sustainable waste management practices?

  3. What strategies can improve waste management practices in real estate developments?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Inefficient waste management practices negatively impact the sustainability of real estate developments.

  2. Regulatory enforcement significantly influences waste management practices.

  3. Implementing sustainable waste management strategies improves environmental outcomes in real estate developments.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on waste management practices in real estate developments in Sokoto State, including residential and commercial projects. It does not cover waste management in other sectors or regions. Limited access to real estate data may pose challenges.

Definitions of Terms

  • Waste Management: The collection, transportation, and disposal of waste in a way that minimizes environmental impact.

  • Real Estate Developments: Construction projects involving residential, commercial, or mixed-use properties.
